Search Engines-use software programs called "spiders' or "robots", which comb the web looking for documents and their web addresses.

Meta-Search engines don't actually crawl the web, they query several other engines at once. They pass your inquiry to the other engines and return the results.

Directories- use humans to categorize web pages by subject. These are best used for general topics, commercial products, organizations, and companies.

Use a search engine when you have a specific topic or keyword. To use search engines effectively, it is essential to use techniques that narrow the results and push the most relevant pages to the top of the results list.
